US State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said that the US would “continue to deal” UK ambassador to the United States Kim Darroch until receiving “further guidance from the White House or the president,” while speaking to the press in Washington DC on Tuesday.

Ortagus’s statements appeared to contradict Trump’s declaration on Twitter on Monday that the US “will no longer deal with” Darroch, following the controversy that erupted after diplomatic cables were leaked to a UK publication in which Darroch called the Trump administration “inept” and “incompetent.”

When asked if conduct between the two countries could be considered “business as usual,” Ortagus answered that the US-UK relationship is “bigger than any individual, it’s bigger than any government. It’s something that has stood the test of time and will continue to do so”

On Tuesday Trump upped the ante on Twitter by calling Darroch “wacky” and “a very stupid guy.”
